River Welland

River Welland

The River Welland beat is at Harringworth on the southern border of Rutland. About a mile and a half of truly exceptional fishing in a lovely location starting at the famous Harringworth Viaduct. This, unlike the Guash, is a spate river and can rise quite dramatically in heavy rain.

The river is wider than the Guash and therefore offers more casting opportunity and variety of river.

The other stretch of River Welland is east of Stamford at Uffington and is even wider as it courses to the Fens. This stretch has, other than cows, very little in the way of bank obstacles. Stocking was carried out but is on hold on this stretch of river at the moment but is does hold trout and chub.

Fishing the Welland is a joy with a huge range of pools, riffles and straight water. Again wading is allowed but, unlike the Guash it has some very deep pools, especially at the Upper Welland at Harringworth.

The river at Harringworth is basically split into three beats - upper, middle and lower and interestingly, they all have a different character giving a variety of fishing experiences.

An absolutely stunning little lowland river which makes you feel like you are the only person on the planet.
